Club HistoryIn the mid 1980's an approximately 25km track was developed along the northern side of the Ashburton River from Ashburton to the coast. Over the year maintenance on the track fell away and the track deteriorated, becoming overgrown, rutted and difficult to use.
In 2008 local mountain bikers made submissions to the Ashburton District Council's walking and cycling strategy, proposing resources be put into upgrading and maintaining the Ashburton River Track for both MTBers and walkers. This would provide the district and town with a significant local asset close to the town centre. The submissions were well received and over the past five years the redevelopment of the track has progressed so much that there are now tracks on both sides of the Ashburton River, one leading to Lake Hood and another to Hakatere beach. With the growth of mountain biking in the last few years a number of races and rides in the Mid Canterbury district have become popular for both recreational and experienced riders. The Mid Canterbury MTB Club holds regular chocolate fish races, club rides and a yearly six-hour team relay race. | ||||||||
